Spend a couple of days driving up the coast to the historic, unspoiled town of Mendocino. Stay at a Bed & Breakfast inn.

Take a few days and visit the natural beauties of Yosemite or Kings Canyon National Parks. Or any of the numerous state parks that dot the Sierra Nevada and foothills areas. Or visit awesome Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Stay in the City. Visit Golden Gate Park, the Cliff House, Chinatown, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, Baker Beach, Fort Point, and the Japanese Teagarden in Golden Gate Park, Japantown, and Yerba Buena Gardens (and the nearby Museum of Modern Art). Go to a Giants baseball game at AT&T Park.

Weekly, and East Bay Weekly. These free publications are full of weekly listings of cultural events and activities.

City Lights Booksellers & Publishers

"There are certain places I would not like to get stuck in,
but San Francisco is not one of them. ... It's one of the nice cities
to come to because, you know, it has some vitality and charm."
- Woody Allen, S.F. Chronicle, August 10, 2001

"When I arrived in the city in 1950, I came overland by train
and took the ferry from the Oakland Mole to the Ferry Building.
And San Francisco looked like some Mediterranean port
-- a small, white city, with mostly white buildings
-- a little like Tunis seen from seaward."
- Lawrence Ferlinghetti

"There was a little alley in San Francisco back of the Southern Pacific
station at Third and Townsend in redbrick of drowsy lazy afternoons..."
- Jack Kerouac

"San Francisco. It has everything...the wonderful sunlight...the hills,
the great bridges, the Pacific at your shoes."
- Dylan Thomas

Walk along the famed Embarcadero/S.F. Waterfront or ride a vintage streetcar from Fisherman's Wharf to the Giants ballpark. Explore Chinatown, the largest Chinese community outside Asia. Don't miss North Beach -- the old Italian quarter and the heartbeat of the City. North Beach gave rise to the Beat movement in the '40s and '50s and was frequented by the likes of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and many others. Visit the great Beat bookstore, City Lights, at Columbus and Broadway and visit the memories of the great literary heyday of the Beat era. Vintage bohemian and Italian coffee houses abound: Caffe Trieste, Enrico's, The Steps of Rome, Cafe Greco, Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store, Malvinas, Coppola's, the North End Cafe and Roma. Many of these cafes have sidewalk seating.   Jack Kerouac

For a short, enjoyable, scenic drive, head south on Coast Highway 1 from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. This is one of the most compelling views of the Pacific Ocean along the Northern California coast of California and one of the most magnificent scenic drives in the world.
